El Festival Amazonas de Ópera lanza su temporada 2019

Six opera titles, family shows, concerts, talks and masterclasses announced for the XXII version of the Amazonas de Opera Festival. Flavia Furtado, executive director, recognizes the festival as the biggest Brazilian opera event, with activities that will take place from April 26 to May 30 at Teatro Amazonas and its surroundings.

In 2019, the Amazonas Opera Festival (FAO) 22nd edition will celebrate the birth centenary of Claudio Santoro, an important composer and the Amazonian maestro, with the performance of the opera Alma and a recital with songs composed by Santoro. Made possible by the Government of Amazonas, through the Secretary of State for Culture (SEC); with the main sponsorship of Bradesco, through the Law of Incentives to Culture; the Ministry of Citizenship and the Secretariat of Special Culture. The event will take place from April 26 to May 30.

Ernani, by Giuseppe Verdi, will open the season in a concert version at the Teatro Amazonas this April 26 at 8 pm, with the Amazonas Choir, the Amazonas Chamber Orchestra and the Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra under the regency of Luiz Fernando Malheiro. Based on the work of Victor Hugo, the story takes place in Spain at the beginning of the sixteenth century and tells the dramatic love story of Ernani and Elvira, imbued with tribulations, encounters and disagreements.

The second work to be carried out in the FAO 2019, Maria Stuarda by Gaetano Donizetti, is based on the work of Friedrich Schiller and tells the rivalry between the cousins ​​Maria, Queen of Scotland and Elizabeth, Queen of England. It is part of a trilogy Elisabetta al Castello di Kenilworth, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux, which have Elizabeth I as the main character. It will be the Brazilian debut of the critical edition of the work, represented by the Amazonas Choir and the Amazonian Philharmonic, under the reggîe of Maestro Marcelo de Jesus.

Tosca by Giacomo Puccini is about the tragic story of the famous singer Floria Tosca and her beloved artist, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, who lived in Rome in 1800, at the end of the period dominated by Napoleon. Performed by the Choir of Amazonas, the Choir of Children of the Lyceum of Arts and Crafts Claudio Santoro and the Philharmonic of Amazonas, under the reggîe of Luiz Fernando Malheiro.

Following the programme, is the Baroque Opera Laboratory, which has been in three editions one of the attractions of FAO. With Mater Dolorosa, based on the cantata Stabat Mater Dolorosa by Giovanni Pergolesi, which reflects on the suffering of Mary during the Passion of Christ. The performance will feature the Balét Experimentaldo Corpo de Dança do Amazonas; Grupo Vocal dos Corpos Artísticos and the Chamber Orchestra of Amazonas, with the musical direction of Atila de Paula.

The great tribute to Claudio Santoro will feature the debut of the revised version of Alma, opera in four acts of the Amazonian composer, based on the first part of the trilogy Los condenados de Oswald de Andrade. The story takes place in São Paulo in the 1920s and shows the problematic relationship of the protagonist with her pimp Mauro, who she is in love with. The opera will feature the Corpo de Dança do Amazon, Amazona Choir, Amazon Philharmonic, with regency of Marcelo de Jesús and Otávio Simões.

The festival’s artistic director, Marcelo de Jesus, highlights the diversity of the FAO 2019 programme. “The festival is very eclectic this year, in addition to the important tribute to Claudio Santoro, with the debut of the new edition of Alma, with several corrections made on the scores; we have Tosca, a title that is very successful, repertoire of all opera theaters, Ernani, which is from the beginning of Verdi’s career, with all the symbolism of being played by the Experimental Orchestra, a young orchestra; Maria Stuarda debuts in Brazil and the baroque experiment Mater Dolorosa, the oldest song that we at the festival, but perhpas the most contemporary of the conception”.

Luiz Fernando Malheiro artistic director of the FAO, also highlights the quality of the cast, which has local, national and international artists. “We have an important cast: the opera that will open the Festival, Ernani will have an impressive cast on the international stage, including two Brazilians: the carioca Luiz Ottavio Faria, who for many years has performed in the main opera houses of Europe, and Rodolfo Giugliani, baritone of São Paulo, who also has a very interesting career “, says.” The Mexican Maria Katzarava, who won the Operalia contest, organized by Plácido Domingo; and the protagonist Enrique Bravo, who is Chilean by birth, but who has lived in Manaus for 20 years, and deserves a special moment. “

This year, the festival will be broadcast live on local TV channel Cultura, some operas will be recorded by the radio station for national screening.

RECITAL BRADESCO
The 22nd FAO program will also feature the Bradesco Recital, which will be presented atTeatro da Instalação on May 29, with a repertoire composed of songs by Claudio Santoro performed by the Orchestra de Cámara de Amazonas.

OPERA MIRIM
The Opera Mirim will feature L’enfant et les Sortilèges by Maurice Ravel in Portuguese and made with puppets by the artists of the Little Theater of the World, a metaphor about childhood and maturity, told through the story of a child who, with the help of enchanted objects, finds a more generous way of life. There will be performances at the hall of the Amazonas Theater, in the neighborhoods of the four areas of the city and in two municipalities of the interior: Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and Benjamin Constant.

From April 14, high school students (selected by registration) will have access to the backstage of the Opera Festival to produce and feed a blog, revealing new talents and new visions of cultural production.

The Secretary of State for Culture (SEC) launched the new website (cultura.am.gov.br) and the application Cultura.AM , to facilitate public access to information on the actions and events developed by the agency.
