Maria Callas Brazilian Singing Contest commemorates its 20th edition

The new edition of the María Callas Brazilian Singing Contest is with open registration until February 18, 2022 through the page of Cia. Ópera São Paulo.

 

Created in 1993 by Paulo Abrão Esper (general and artistic director of the Cia. Ópera São Paulo and of the contest), the María Callas Brazilian Singing Contest held 10 biannual editions until 2011. In 2013 it began its annual trajectory and until 2017 held the competition for an opera title, as well as a male and female grand prize. The titles produced during these five years were Rigoletto (G. Verdi – 1813-1901), Il Barbiere di Siviglia (G. Rossini – 1792-1868), Carmen (G. Bizet – 1838-1875), La Bohème (G. Puccini – 1858- 1924) and La Traviata (G. Verdi).

 

As of 2018, the contest notes the need for a change in the award structure and begins to offer three male awards and three female awards as 1st; 2nd and 3rd places in each category, in addition to any candidate actually registered and who appears in person at least in the semifinal test, may be chosen for an opera role, in the title chosen for the Cia. Ópera São Paulo season. .

 

To participate in the 20th edition of the María Callas Brazilian Singing Contest, the singers must send a video singing an opera aria and the material will be approved by an internal commission of the Cia. Ópera São Paulo, formed by Paulo Esper – General Director and Artistic, Robson Tirotti – President of the Friends of the Cia. Ópera São Paulo Association and Fabiana Crepaldi – Opera Critic.

On February 28, those selected for the face-to-face semifinal phase in São Paulo, which will take place in March, will be announced. Already the final phase, keeping the tradition of the contest, will be in the city of Jacareí/SP on March 31st. The candidates and their pianists who do not reside in the city of São Paulo will have lodging with breakfast paid by the organization of the contest, respecting the rules in the regulation. And, all the candidates and their pianists will have lodging with breakfast in the city of Jacareí, even if they do not go to the final phase. There will be 3 prize winners in money per category, female and male, and 1 special public award that will be decided by the audience present at the final. The jury for the 20th version of the María Callas Brazilian Singing Contest will be made up of prominent and important names on the national and international lyrical scene. Among them we highlight Sabino Lenoci (chief editor of the magazine l’Opera International Magazine – Itália), José Velasco (International Agent), Carlos Rauscher (Member of the Consultative Council and the Artistic Committee of the Artistic Culture), Fernando Sáns Riviere (General Director of the Ópera Actual Magazine of Barcelona – Spain), Richard Martet (Chief Editor of the French Opera Magazine of Paris, Writer and Critic) and Fulvio Macciardi (Superintendent and artistic director of the Teatro Comunale de Bologna). In addition to Luiz Fernando Malheiro (Artistic Director of the Amazonas Opera Festival, Artistic Director and Principal Regent of the Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra), as president of the jury.
