The Pearl Fishers is one of Georges Bizet’s first operas. Composed more than a decade before Carmen, it was the work with which he made his way into French opera. The plot revolves around themes such as love, loyalty, friendship and individual sacrifice for the general welfare. His great fraternity duet, “Au fond du temple saint”, is one of the most famous fragments of French lyricism and the aria “Je crois entendre encore” is recognized for its sad nostalgic evocation. Although it is one of the titles in the usual repertoire of the main opera houses, it was performed at the Teatro Colón for the only time in the 1913 season.
