«The Consul», by Gian Carlo Menotti, in a new production of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires

The Consul, the opera in three acts with music and libretto by Gian Carlo Menotti, arrives at the opera season of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires starting on Tuesday, May 3 at 8:00 p.m. This version to be presented is a new production of the Teatro Colón and will have the musical direction of Justin Brown, at the head of the Stable Orchestra of the Teatro Colón and stage direction of Rubén Szuchmacher.

 

With stage direction by Rubén Szuchmacher comes the opera The Consul, by Gian Carlo Menotti, in a new production at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.

 

Rubén Szuchmacher is an Argentine actor, theater director, regisseur and theater teacher who has been intensely active in recent decades. Born in Buenos Aires, he began his artistic studies at the IFT Theater School of Artistic Initiation at the age of 6. Afterwards he continued in different disciplines such as music; he reigns at the Higher Institute of Art of the Teatro Colón; Corporal Expression and Modern Dance. In the professional field he has carried out an intense task in the different areas of theatrical, cinematographic and television work. He has received numerous nominations and awards such as the Ace de Oro Award, the María Guerrero Award, the Florencio Sánchez Award, the World Theater Award, the Getea Award, the Clarín Award, and in 2010, the Trinidad Guevara Award.

 

Esta versión a presentarse es una nueva producción del Teatro Colón y tendrá la dirección musical de Justin Brown, al frente de la Orquesta Estable del Teatro Colón y dirección de escena de Rubén Szuchmacher.

The Consul recounts the misadventures of a politically persecuted man and the Kafkaesque efforts of his wife in a diplomatic headquarters to flee to a free country. Humanist and playwright with popular roots, much of Menotti’s work (1911-2007) questions the relationship between man and power in all its manifestations.

 

In 1999, at the age of 88, the Italian-American composer came to Argentina for the first time to take charge of the régie of this title at the Teatro Colón which, between 1953 and 1967, had already offered it for four seasons, after its premiere. World Cup in Philadelphia. For this work, Menotti won the Pulitzer Prize for Music and the New York Theater Critics Circle.

 

The four scheduled performances of The Consul will take place on Tuesday, May 3, Thursday, May 5 and 10 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 8 at 5:00 p.m.
