IV Opera XXI Awards: The Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo among the winners

IV Premios Ópera XXI en Teatro Real de Madrid

The Argentine theater wins the Prize for the Best Lyric Dissemination Initiative, while the Colombian coliseum, in co-production with the Colombian Opera, is awarded the best New Latin American Production.

The jury of the IV Ópera XXI Awards, made up of national and international experts, journalists and critics of recognized prestige, has ruled this morning, in a meeting held at the Teatro Real in Madrid, the national lyrical activity during the 2020/2021 season, a cycle that took place in a period of great uncertainty due to the global health situation and that required a supplementary effort from all theaters and artists in the presentation and maintenance of the programming of their seasons, within the safety regulations and with complete guarantees for the attending public.

Among the winners of the IV Opera XXI Awards, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires stands out, an institution that was awarded the Prize for the Best Initiative for the Dissemination of Lyric for its project Colón Fábrica, a permanent exhibition of historical sets, costumes and props of the coliseum, all built in the workshops of the theater itself, in an exhibition space of 7,500 square meters.

For its part, the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo, in Bogotá, was awarded for the Best New Latin American Production, an award given in collaboration with OLA (Latin American Opera), for the opera Gianni Schicchi (Puccini). In co-production with the Ópera de Colombia, the production recorded at the Teatro Mayor on October 3, 2020 and broadcast openly between November 5 and 12, 2020 under the stage direction of Ramiro Gutiérrez Castro.

“The seasons represented by these awards show the ability of Spanish theaters to react and adapt to the most difficult and unexpected situations. Spain was during that cycle a lit cultural beacon, the only one, in which the whole world looked at each other. It demonstrated the full potential of our cultural industry and of the professionals of the Spanish lyric”, said the president of Ópera XXI, Oriol Aguilà at the end of the deliberations.

After the stage break season with the outbreak of the Covid in the world, the 2020/2021 (the cycle that is awarded at the IV Ópera XXI Awards) demonstrated that culture is necessary, courageous and a great industry, capable of adapting to the most complex situations and continue fulfilling its vocation of public service.

“We will never give up our work of essential activity and service to society. These awards are proof of this and all the winners are an example and a sample of all the talent and strength of our stages, which after the stoppage of the pandemic adapted to the most difficult yet”, reviewed the president of Ópera XXI, and He added: “The awards are our expression of sharing and generating an opera community in Spain”.

The ceremony of the IV Ópera XXI Awards will take place on April 30, 2022 at the Cervantes Theater in Malaga, in a gala commanded by the stage director Joan Anton Rechi.
