Teatro UdeC Premieres Requiem (W. Mozart) Under the Direction of Spanish Maestro Javier Fajardo

One year after its sold-out performances, Mozart’s Requiem returns on 27 and 28 March to the Teatro Universidad de Concepción as the highlight of one of the most anticipated concerts of the 2026 Symphonic Season, conducted by Spanish maestro Javier Fajardo, making his Chilean debut.
For the second consecutive year, the Corporación Cultural Universidad de Concepción will present Mozart’s Requiem, a production that in 2025 made history by selling out both performances. In 2026, the event returns as one of the season’s most significant moments, featuring a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem, one of the most moving and profound works in the symphonic-choral repertoire.

The performances will take place on Friday, 27 March at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, 28 March at 6:00 p.m. at the Teatro Universidad de Concepción, bringing together the UdeC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus alongside a distinguished cast of national soloists.

Mozart’s Requiem is not only one of the most emblematic sacred compositions in history but also his musical testament. Written in the final months of his life and left unfinished at his death in 1791, the work is imbued with profound dramatic and spiritual intensity. From the dark opening chords to the power of the Dies irae and the emotional depth of the Lacrimosa, this score offers a sonic experience that resonates both intimately and collectively, making it a work every listener should experience live at least once.
The programme will open with the Adagio and Fugue in C minor, a highly dramatic piece that anticipates the character of the Requiem and allows the audience to immerse themselves in the reflective and solemn atmosphere appropriate to this occasion.

The musical direction will be led by Spanish maestro Javier Fajardo, marking his long-awaited debut in Chile with this concert. With a solid career in the choral and symphonic fields, he has been recognised in international competitions and has worked with prominent European ensembles such as the Kammerchor Stuttgart, the Klassische Philharmonie Stuttgart and the Rundfunkchor Berlin, in addition to collaborating with major orchestras and choirs in Spain.
Since 2022, he has served as Musical Director of the Coro de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, establishing an active presence on the European music scene. “Mozart’s Requiem is one of the greatest musical moments in history. I have also had the fortune of conducting it many times—probably more than any other work—and I am therefore very much looking forward to working with the orchestra and chorus of Corcudec to bring Mozart’s final musical notes to life and make these concerts a truly unique experience,” said the maestro.

On stage, the company’s resident ensembles will also come together, featuring the Universidad de Concepción Symphony Orchestra and the Symphonic Choir, an ensemble approaching its 72nd anniversary and recognised as one of the country’s leading choral institutions.
Under the direction of Eduardo Díaz, the group will once again perform one of the cornerstones of its repertoire. Regarding this, the Executive Director of Corcudec explains that opening the season with this piece represents “a highly significant artistic challenge, due to the expressive depth and the leading role Mozart gives to the choir.” According to Díaz, “the score demands technical precision and constant vocal cohesion to convey clearly the contrasts and dramatic intensity that characterise this masterpiece.”
The concert will also feature soloists Camila Guggiana (soprano), Valeria Vega Matus (mezzo-soprano), Gonzalo Quinchahual (tenor), and Pedro Alarcón (bass), all of whom have distinguished careers on both national and international stages, in opera as well as symphonic repertoire.

The success achieved in 2025, with both performances sold out, not only demonstrated the public’s interest in this repertoire but also established the concert as a highly anticipated event within the annual programme. Its return in 2026 reinforces this connection with the audience and positions the performance as a new tradition at Teatro UdeC for Holy Week.
In a context marked by reflection, Mozart’s Requiem offers a profoundly moving artistic experience, capable of touching and uniting audiences around one of the most significant works in the history of music. Tickets are available at standard prices.
