Auditorio Nacional del Sodre 2020: Double program Cavalleria Rusticana / I Pagliacci and debut of West Side Story

More than 50 shows make up the 2020 program of Auditorio Nacional del Sodre, including ballet, opera, symphonic concerts, lyrical galas, children’s shows, music of camera and theater.

This year 2020 stands out in the programming of Sodre, the presence for the first time of a musical West Side Story, in addition to the theater production Waiting for Godot, the Tango Lovers company with its show Mirando al Sur and the world premiere, by the National Ballet Sodre, of La Tregua.

The lyric season is composed of two titles: the double program Cavalleria Rusticana / I Pagliacci and West Side Story.

I Pagliacci (Ruggero Leoncavallo) and Cavalleria Rusticana (Pietro Mascagni) two examples of Italian verismo are inseparable operas from their very origin, which have remained in the repertoire of their prolific composers. The verista style in the opera is distinguished by the realistic portrait of contemporary everyday life. The themes chosen are not distant in time or emblematic, but prevail the present reality and especially the reality of the humble and oppressed classes of less educated areas. Verista narrative wants to be a piece of life. The musical verismo has its origin in Italy in 1890 with the first representation of Cavalleria Rusticana. From this opera and its author, others emerge that have also been framed in verismo, such as Leoncavallo, Cilea, Giordano, Franchetti and Puccini. Verism is what unites both librettos. Cavalleria Rusticana, is the opening of verismo. During that time, Italy was a country where the operatic genre did not go through its best moments, since what predominated were the symphonic compositions. Thanks to Mascagni’s opera that trend changed. On the other hand I Pagliacci, by Ruggero Leoncavallo, is the continuation of that moment. Leoncavallo was a study partner of Puccini, students of Ponchielli, author of the Gioconda. Both operas contain symphonic moments of great importance. There is a common theme in the works of verism, exoticism. In Turandot, Madama Butterfly, Cavalleria Rusticana, I Pagliacci, etc., you can see a watercolor drawing that represents a world seen from a close perspective. Such a particular world where small things are brought into relevance through literature and poetry.

This production built in the Workshops of Auditorio Nacional del Sodre will feature the scenic direction of Fabio Sparvoli, and the scenographic of Alessandro Camara and Enrique Bordolini. The cast includes soloists Sofía Mara, María Luján Mirabelli, Raquel Pierotti, Enrique Folger, Leonardo López Linares.

Represented continuously throughout the world since its premiere in 1957, West Side Story has been awarded all the awards in the field of musical theater, throughout its many repositions and re-releases. Arthur Laurens transports Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to New York City, where two young lovers are caught in the clash between two street gangs: the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. His struggle to survive in an environment of hate, violence and prejudice shapes one of the most exciting, beautiful and relevant stories of musical theater. In all categories, formats and forms of artistic expression, West Side Story represents the artistic excellence that enshrines it as “the greatest musical of all time.”

It arrives for the first time at Auditorio Nacional del Sodre in his own production next to the Sodre National Youth Choir, the Sodre Youth Orchestra and the Sodre Artistic Training Schools. All of them under the musical direction of the teacher Ariel Britos and the regie of Alberto “Coco” Rivero.
