Lotte de Beer turns Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles into a reality show at the Liceu

With only 35 years old, the Dutch one has become one of the rising values ​​of the European stage direction. The maestro Yves Abel directs the Les Pêcheurs de Perles by Georges Bizet, which for the first time in the Liceu is represented in its original language, French.


For more than 50 years Les Pêcheurs de Perles , Georges Bizet’s was not represented in the Liceu. On May 13, it premieres its first French version in Barcelona and will do so with a groundbreaking staging by Dutch director Lotte de Beer, who moves the action to the set of a reality show. The contestants of this program will be Ekaterina Bakanova, who debuted at the Liceu, and Olga Kulchinska in the role of Léïla, John Osborn and Dmitry Korchak in the role of Nadir, Michael Adams and Borja Quiza as Zurga and Fernando Radó and Federico De Michelis in the role of Nourabad. All of them under the musical direction of the Canadian teacher Yves Abel, a regular of the great stages around the world.

One of the young promises of the European stage direction, the Dutch Lotte de Beer (35 years old), debuts at the Liceu with an innovative staging that brings the action of Bizet’s opera to the present and puts it on a reality show . The original fishing village of Les Pêcheurs de Perles is in this setting a remote island where the characters become contestants who live surrounded by television cameras and under the watchful eye of viewers. An innovative concept that has “turned the difficulty of the plot into a virtue, with an intelligent, modern, believable and fresh reading that, for modern audiences, still maintains its romantic emotion,” says the artistic director of the Liceu Christina Scheppelmann.

Les Pêcheurs de Perles is an opera in three acts and libretto by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré that premiered on September 30, 1863 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. A Barcelona would arrive 24 years later, on October 29, 1887, at Liceu, where it has not been performed since 1964 and where it has been seen on 41 occasions.


New prices for young people in the 2019/20 season
As announced in the presentation of the season of 20 years, the Gran Teatre del Liceu advances the new price policy for young people with the promotion of tickets at 30 euros for minors of 35 years who want to enjoy Bizet’s opera Les Pêcheurs de Perles. All the interested parties can acquire any available locality of any function with a maximum of two tickets per person, as long as the companion is also under 35 years old and both of them credit him with DNI in the access of the Theater. Tickets will go on sale 15 days before each release under the UNDER35 Rate. This initiative is a preview of the new pricing policy for young people that the Liceu will officially start with the 20th anniversary season, in September 2019.
