The Czech composer Antonin Dvorák wanted to make a popular opera and in only a few months he created what is, since 1900, one of the most represented in the history of the Czech Republic: only in 1946 he had more than 500 presentations. Rusalka, aquatic nymph, of the mermaid family – many say that the libretto is based on Slavic legends but also on the historical story of Hans Christian Andersen – is the expression of the composer’s melodic gift. The story of the mermaid who wants to be human for the love of a prince arrives for the first time to Columbus, with the famous aria “Song of the moon”. A metaphor for the link between human beings and nature and a fantastic love story.
